  • Dr. Layne, I really enjoyed reading Igniting a Passion for Reading. This year, I have made a concerted effort to promote books and reading to my students and staff like I've never done before. The results? Kids and teachers talking books with me on a daily basis. Love the relationships books can build. My goal as an elementary principal is to instill that passion in all of my students and staff and help them become lifelong readers. Your book was another affirmation and inspiration to me on that journey. (We have something in common--I was born in Crawfordsville, too!) Thank you for your work!

  • Mr. Layne, I just want to thank you for the inspiration you continue to bring to me. I heard you speak at IRC years ago about YA cafes, and I started doing them in my school. They are even funded by IRC Literacy Support Grants that you told me about. I bought "Igniting a Passion for Reading" and started adding things to my own teaching shortly after. And to keep it up, next week I am "training" the teachers in my school to do read arounds. Thank you for helping me inspire the same passion I have for reading in my students and in all the students at my school.

  • Hello Dr. Layne. I am a teacher at Saipan Community School and I came across your book, "Igniting a Passion for Reading", by way of another teacher giving me numerous sources that I may be interested in. I read and skimmed through them, and yours stood out, because of its simple and whimsical writing. I enjoyed reading it so much that I forgot it's a professional type of book. Needless to say, after I read your book, I ordered "This Side of Paradise" and that reignited my passion for reading young adult fiction books. In a span of two weeks, I completed the books that my 6th, 7th, and 8th graders were reading, which totaled 5 books in a span of 2 weeks. And guess what, I'm still going and I have no intention to stop :-) Thanks for inspiring me to read fiction again, even though your miles away!

  • I was given your book, Igniting a Passion for Reading by a friend as a birthday gift this past June! I just finished it and I simply want to say thank you! I laughed and cried along with each story you so artfully wove for your readers!! I have been using the Daily Five for four years now and have the good fortune to have a ninety-minute literacy block! I am excited to build the "will" of my new 5th grade students this year as well as their skills! I am inspired beyond words and hope to be able to thank you in person some day! Have a great start to the new school year! :)

  • Last Wednesday I hurried to my Sister's house at her husbands urgent plea that she is going to need me. When I got there. My brother in law had given her the news that he has a rare cancer that can only be treated in Texas. We live in Alabama. So rare 1 in a million in the world are diagnosed a year in the world. It was my job to take care of my beautiful nieces given to us by God from China. Once dinner and bath was over, it was story time. It took everything I had not to cry. The book they chose was the Over Land And Sea Adoption book. You signed it. I wrote to both of them in the book about you signing it and how I waited in line. They INSISTED I read that part two times. I totally forgot I even gave that book to them! It was a sweet comfort. Sitting with them in bed with a book they cherished so dearly while their parents began to digest the ton of bricks news that fell into their lives. Thanks for your talent. It was an unexpected blessing.

  • Yes, I was one of those people who asked questions on your presentation in upstate NY (5/23/12). I have another question. I'm planning to write a novel, but I'm not sure if I'm good enough. Almost all of the chart-topping young adult novels have recurring themes. I want mine to be original. So what do I do? Sincerely and Cheers, A. Dessay

  • Dear Mr. Layne I attended the Valpo conference in the fall. You mentioned how some grade levels want a protected book list. Our Middle school wants us to send a list of protected books. What advice could you give me? This came from our school corperation's curriculm director. How do I tell them it's ok to read a book again!! Thanks, Jim

  • Dr. Layne you are such an inspiration to me! I went to your conference yesterday in Burlington and I came back to school requesting our superintendent book you for professional development in the fall. Your book and the strategies you use in reading are so practical, easy to use and inspired me to create a whole reading project on your book. Thank you for your amazing contribution to students, reading and educating others teachers.

  • Thanks for your positive and inspirational message at EARCOS. There was a real optimistic and energizing spirit about you and your words. You reminded me that we teach kids, and that is what counts. Jesus loved children and it is obvious you do too. Blessings!

  • Thank you so much for coming to our school today. It is so cool that I got my favorite book;Paradise Lost; signed by you. I don't know if you read these but remember when you asked who the person in the picture and you called on the girl and she said "The girl who wrote the book." That was pretty funny. Oh, and I also hate reading, but when someone finally got me to read a book by you I couldn't put it down. Thank you for the great experience. I hope I grow up to be just like you someday.

  • Dear Mr. Layne, I'd like to thank you for signing my copy of This Side of Paradise for my 6th grade students while you were in Utah for our literacy conference. I told my students about it and they all wanted to read it. I had all my students who wanted to read it put their name in a lottery. I had many disappointed students when only one could take the book. I got a text that evening from one of my student's mom who said she road her bike to the public library and found her own copy! I will tell our librarian about it so we can soon have it in our school library. I read it and am thrilled that it is as you said, a book that reluctant readers will love. Thank you for writing and sharing your love for reading. I am anxious to read Paradise Lost. You inspire us all, including my 9 year old daughter who is a budding author. Thank you! Kim Elison

  • I've seen and listened to Dr. Layne at 4 or 5 workshops in our district over the last 2 years. We recently started a Breakfast Book Chat with teachers at our school. The idea came from "Igniting a Passion for a Reading." It is a great book for first year teachers, teachers with 5 years experience or those of you ready to retire. It's a must read. Thank you Dr. Layne for helping our school and District308!
