Igniting a Passion for Writing

The goal of creating a classroom community in grades 3-12 where writers thrive instead of merely survive is the target of this workshop, and Steven loves to watch educators become passionate as they discover their ability to make this happen for their students. Beyond simply knowing the process of writing is understanding the kind of writing experiences that foster a true sense of success and enjoyment in our students. This workshop will provide specific strategies for immediate implementation as well as provide a balanced look at ways to build confidence in writers and foster the joy of writing in reluctant writers.
Audience: Any instructional personnel providing direct service to students
Grades: This seminar is specifically geared to grade levels 3-12
Length: 1-2 Days

Improving Writing Instruction: Teaching the Critical Skill of Focus

Teachers frequently acknowledge frustration with guiding students in their writing due to feeling overwhelmed with written work that is far from exemplary. One of the most common weaknesses in student writing is a lack of clear focus. This workshop will provide expert modeling and strategic direction to assist English/Language Arts teachers in grades 3-12 so that they can determine when errors in focus are arising and teach them what to do to correct the problem! A practical step-by-step process will be provided to allow teachers to become competent and confident in teaching the skill of focus in writing.
Audience: Any instructional personnel providing direct service to students
Grades: This seminar is specifically geared to grade levels 3-12

Improving Writing Instruction: Teaching Support & Organization

Two critical issues in writing are support and organization, and often the two go hand-in-hand. When a piece of writing is poorly organized it leads to confusion for the reader and when supportive information is lacking, the writer is presumed to be deficient in knowledge. This workshop will provide practical lessons to English/Language Arts teachers in grades 3-12 for actually teaching these important skills with success and excitement and building the readers’ confidence in the writers’ knowledge and skill.
Audience: Any instructional personnel providing direct service to students
Grades: This seminar is specifically geared to grade levels 3-12
Length: 1 Day

Writing from Reading: Response Modes That Motivate

This workshop for English/Language Arts teachers in grades 3-12 will provide a deep dive into writing as an effective and motivational response mode to text that has been read by students or delivered to students. Participants will have the opportunity to experience a wide array of writing modes and response models that will allow them to return to the classroom with exciting writing experiences they can’t wait to provide for their students. Additionally, we will discuss management and assessment in terms of the volume of writing produced when large numbers of students are preparing written responses to text.

Igniting a Passion for Reading

Energetic author and award-winning educator Dr. Steven L. Layne promises a seminar to delight, empower and motivate teachers and librarians who are interested in bridging the literacy gap. The entertainment options available to young people in our fast-paced society are ever on the increase. What are we, as educators, doing to make reading books more appealing? Who's responsible for "keeping the reading lamp lit" for our young people today? Teachers - of every content area and grade level can play a part - as well as the library staff. The kids are rarely our students for only a year. In some ways, they'll be our students forever, and we care about their future. This seminar will offer practical ideas for every classroom that will keep kids reading and loving books. Great titles - old and new - will be highlighted for all grade levels.
